Hail to the Chief?

September 6, 2007

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The following should in no way be interpreted as a political endorsement. It is merely an observation.

We'd like to wish new White House press secretary Dana Perino good luck. You're going to need it. The White House has announced that Tony Snow's last day is Sept. 14. We're not here to comment on the performance of the past press secretary to President Bush, or the past-past press secretary, or even the past-past-past press secretary, but merely to acknowledge it has to be one of the toughest PR jobs in the land.

Did you know that each of the past two Presidents had four press secretaries during their tenures? Regardless of what side of the political fence you sit on, let's take a moment to honor the thankless jobs these fine people have performed. Let's give a round of applause to Perino, Snow, Scott McClellan, and Ari Fleischer under Bush, but don't forget Jake Siewert, Joe Lockhart, Mike McCurry, and Dee Dee Myers under Bill Clinton.

In case you are wondering, in the 24 years from 1969 (under Richard Nixon) to 1993 (under George H. Bush) a grand total of eight people held the position. But, who's counting?

Jeff's Gravatar It should be noted that Tony Snow is not leaving because the job is so difficult. He's leaving because he's dying from cancer.
