Human growth hormone's a hell of a drug

January 28, 2008

A couple years back, we repositioned two local health facilities under one name. Throughout our insight investigation, one fundamental truth drove our brand development: no pain, no gain gyms don't appeal to people any more. Nowadays, people want a workout that suits their personal needs. The result? We created Miramont Lifestyle Fitness - and just about every one of their attendance records has been shattered since we launched the new name.

Contrast that idea with this brash new approach for Denver's Anti-Gym. Let's just say this dude didn't find the same research we did.

You gotta see this.

Do you know what sport is played by two-thirds of the world? No, we're not talking about Polo or Jai Alai. It's Cricket and it's taking over America.

In case you haven't seen the billboards, TV commercials, and print ads that have flooded the Fort Collins market in recent weeks, the Stanford 20/20 Cricket Tournament, played in the West Indies each year, has selected our town to make its American broadcast debut.

Throughout the next month, Stanford 20/20 Cricket is taking over the town and hosting a series of viewing parties for each match and a family day where residents can learn and play the sport of cricket. The Fort Collins cricket adventure will culminate at a Caribbean-themed street festival in downtown to celebrate the final weekend of the tournament. So that’s what they’ve been saying…

This new Bud Light ad, Ability to Talk to Animals, brilliantly answers a question that many in this office have always wondered. And in the process, they've created "the quote of the week." We just can't seem to stop saying "Sausages!"

Which is greener: BP or the Statue of Liberty?

Notice how just about every company is going sustainable these days? Perhaps, though, some of them should be focusing on another shade of green: tarnish. As in their already tarnished brands. Can a new eco-friendly image overcome years of eco-neglect? Many leading energy and automotive companies are anxious to find out.

Beware of public opinion

January 9, 2008

We're not the first people to comment on this, but definitely felt the need. How in the world did the pollsters prior to the primary in New Hampshire miss the boat so badly?

In case you didn't see it, prior to last night's democratic primary, Senator Clinton was only supposed to garner around 30-percent of the vote, and be defeated handily by Senator Obama. Senator Obama had a projected lead anywhere from five points to 13 points, according to other polls going into the night. Clinton defeated Obama by racking up 39-percent of the vote.

A nine-point swing?

Let's relate this back to our business. Imagine if, as a marketing agency, we conducted a focus group or poll for one of our clients and botched the results that badly. What would happen to us if we convinced a client to spend a hefty chunk of money on a marketing campaign based on those results? I don't think we need to answer that question.

HD DVD: We Hardly Knew Ye

January 9, 2008

Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Blu-ray. HD DVD has got to be tired of hearing that name in the news lately, and it's everywhere thanks to CES. The annual consumer electronics event in Las Vegas has been positively buzzing around Blu-ray this week. Following a January 4 announcement that Warner Bros. will back Blu-ray Disc technology exclusively, scores of manufacturers and film producers have hopped on the bandwagon and are touting their Blu-ray plans to anyone who will listen at CES. It seems to be the final crushing blow in the battle of high-definition disc technology...it's probably safe to say that HD DVD is officially a sinking ship. Check out all the announcements at www.blu-ray.com.
